Art Mothers

Year2022
TechniqueProjection / Video Loop

In the project “Art Mothers” I combine excerpts from interviews with female artists on the subject of motherhood. Artists who are not mothers also have their say, because they too often experience discrimination on the subject of motherhood. On the one hand, the interviews deal with the difficulties and problems that arise due to motherhood in the art world, because discrimination against mothers is still part of our everyday professional life as artists. On the other hand, they address taboo topics such as abortion, infertility or the voluntary decision against motherhood.

The project addresses to society: it draws attention to the urgency of changing social structures and calls for a rethinking by addressing gender-specific injustices. It criticizes social phenomena such as the often still greater responsibility of women for childcare and household chores. It points out structural problems such as the lack of affordable childcare places or the mostly complete absence of childcare for artist-in-residence stays. It addresses the resulting impeded career opportunities for female artists who are mothers. It advocates recognizing a woman’s decision for or against motherhood in a male-dominated art world. It emphasizes that such issues should not have any influence on the evaluation of women artists’ work. The aim of the project is to open a space for discussion and to promote acceptance in every direction on the subject of motherhood. Technical data: for exhibitions, “Art Mothers” is projected as a video loop, furthermore the interviews are processed into a book in order to share as wide a range of interviews as possible.
